5th Annual VeloTek Grand Prix Stage Race

Back for a fifth year the VeloTek Grand Prix offers something special, a time based stage race. Where your results are based on the lowest accumulated time across 3 events, similar to playing golf, but way harder and more fun! The Tour De France is an example of a time based stage race where athlete’s complete one stage to advance to the next, your rankings in the race is called your “GC” or general classification. If you think racing once is fun try racing three times in a weekend, knowing when to go hard and when to conserve is critical.

The 13th Annual Spring Fling wrapped up Saturday April 6th with intense racing andseveral battles for 4th place in the series with multiple ties. Here's a photo of the junior girls podium and the Category 3/4 men driving the pace up. Expect final series points standing, more photos and a series recap by April 13th.

The 5th Annual VeloTek Grand Prix Stage race flyer will post this weekend and it's very similar in format to the 2007 version. The biggest change is a Cat 4 men's team prize and a request for even more cross winds on the Perry Lake road course. The VTGP is one of the few time based stage races in the Midwest this year, don't miss the 5th edition on April 26th and 27th. Mother nature continues her cruel tricks at one of the coldest Spring Fling's in years.. The morning started with highs near 50, low wind and sunshine, later clouds moved in and a chilly south east wind made racing tough. Never mind the cold hot racing was the action of the day with a strong women's and super bee turn out. Bret Johnsoncontinues superdomestique duty for Bicycle Shack and rumors has "the missile" upgrading to Category 2. Team GP VeloTek's John Shipmen continues to nip at the heels of Bicycle Shack Racing Team with the support of Jim Whittaker and Gary Calton of Team GP VeloTek.

Seth Stover a 1st year Architecture student racing for KSU has joined Revolution Racing as one of four photographers. Over 100 photos will post of the March 29th Spring Fling later this week. Extra photos of women and super bee's and Cat 3/4's. If you are interested in a photograph please contact Revolution Racing

New photos from Spring Fling #3 and #4 have been added to the web site.

This weekend March 22nd is the Spring Fling Prologue Time Trial. This 2.5 KM is short but not easy, because of the short distances speeds are quite high, the corners are tricky to navigate and you can scrub precious speed. USAC Level 1 certified coach Jim Whittaker says “Your warm-up has to be as hard or harder than the actual effort. A common mistake is to not warm-up enough and to say I could have gone faster, I feel so much better post-race. Don’t make that mistake, bring your trainer and get after it for 45 minutes or more before the Time Trial. Also riders are split pretty evenly between road bikes and time trial machines, if you can handle your rig then a TT machine may give a slight edge. But that depends on the wind direction and speed, the prologue is surprisingly strategic, and fun.”

You’ll start from the main campground #1 entrance and complete one full loop of the big loop crit course and finish out at the entrance start. Because of the scoring requirements of a time trial we ask that you pre-register or pay an extra fee the day of. Too many registrations are difficult before an early Time Trial. All season race holders will be registered in their primary class, if you want to place in two categories you’ll need to ride it twice and pay a second fee for the second time trial. We also need to know to allow you enough time between efforts. Pre-registered means we have you intent to race and have payment in full prior to Saturday. Saturday race registration opens at 8am and closes at 9am sharp, and the race begins at 9:15am. You’ll start in the order of your crit order, so Cat 5’s first, and Cat 1/2  last.

The world record for the Spring Fling Prologue TT is 3:17 for the 2.5 kilometer course. Three athletes have gone that fast, Brian Jensen, Andy Chocha, and Steve Rouff. It’s impossible to say who was fastest as the start line moves a little and weather conditions are variable. Andy and Steve are alumni of VeloTek Performance Coaching Services. VeloTek Performance’s Jim Whittaker told us that his training metholdogy uses 3 to 4 minute intervals to work the glycolitic and oxidative energy systems which are critical to cycling success. Doing 3 to 8 maximal three minute intervals is hard work, but it’s made easier with the immediate feedback of a power meter. Seeing your progress drives you to excel. You quickly learn that your power production is somewhat independent of your heart rate, you need to drive the entire 2.5 KM to be successful. Despite some of the coldest crit racing weather ever, temps in the 15 to 20 degree with winds around 10 mph, the racers were out in force this past Saturday. Tough conditions made a break more likely in the ¾ race as 9 riders broke away with 30 minutes to go. From that group Chris Beer (Cycle City) and Bret Johnson (Bicycle Shack) had the most to say about aggressive riding. They attacked earlier in the races to draw out a group of 7 and then they attacked the break with 8 laps to go. Garrick Valverde (Mesa Cycles) was active in the break along with Jim Whittaker (GP VeloTek) and Brian Bradley (Bike Shack) who is a perennially top podium finisher at the Spring Fling.

Jennifer Herrell (Mercy) fought it out with Shari Woiwood (Bicycle Shack) for the top 2 in the women’s ¾ race and GP VeloTek junior Jacqueline Denny continued her march up the cycling ranks.

Category 4 Sprint powerhouse Jim Rank (Bicycle Shack) handled the 4’s with the speed he showed last year at the Twilight Bike Race in Lawrence . Seems like the Bike Shack riders love crits! They have a hard weekly group ride out of their shop sponsor that they attend most of the year, obviously its working as they are riding well in most race categories.

Nancy Angell of Santa Fe Trail Bike & Coffee Shop who is new to racing won her first race ever! Sante Fe Trails is a fling sponsor and they bring close to 20 riders per weekend. Team GP VeloTek’s woman’s squad continues to grow with junior and senior riders competing for the first time at the spring fling.

KSU and GP VeloTek rider Zach Dubais wins the cat 5 race and Steve Luttjohann (Capp’s) continues to impress off the front and in points sprints.

March 14th, 2008 - RACERS TAKE NOTE!
Spring Fling racers prepare for more challenging weather this Saturday March 15th. Remember that racing is rain or snow, that is if the snow doesn’t accumulate on the pavement we’ll race. Generally, it has to be 20 degrees or less for several days to cool the pavement down enough for snow accumulation. See you Saturday at the races!

Great turnout and racing again for the second weekend of the Spring Fling Series. Weekend results and overall series standings are updated in the results section. Remember, you will get to drop your lowest point total from any weekend during the series which will be reflected in the overall standings when the series is complete.

March 5th, 2008
On Saturday March 1st spring winds gusting to over 30 mph blew in a strong first spring fling race turnout. An almost record turnout of 168 racers greeted the first day of the Kansas road race season. Many racers enjoyed racing in multiple races to post a record 235 race entries. Every race weekend we’ll focus on a different race or two and welcome rider submissions or links.

In the Category 5 race category Capp’s cycling rider Steve Luttjohann dominant the race to win the Cat 5’s and placed 2nd to Marty Sutton (Cycle City)  in 36+ Category 5 race.

The large Cat 4 race was a battlefield among the larger teams, with Team GP VeloTek, Cycle City, Wheel Cyclery, and Bike Shack battling for supremacy. Several early attacks by Team GP VeloTek were covered by Cycle City and others and the pack paid for their hard chases. John Funk (GP VeloTek) attacked with 10 laps to go and went solo until Jeff Schroeder (Cycle city) joined him, the two worked well together until Schroeder moved past Funk by a bike length the final lap. Also active was race sponsor and Wheel Cyclery shop owner Dan Jordan who is making an impressive entry into road cycling this spring.
In the Cat ¾ race Chris Wallace (Mesa), Jeremy Pych (Bike shack) and Carl Garrison (OZ Racing) attacked in the second lap with 4 other riders who they eventually shed. After dropping promoter Jim Whittaker (GP VeloTek) and his teammate Zach Rogers the escapees worked well to battle the strong winds. Ex-800 meter track runner Jeremy “The Missile” Pych won the race.  Of the 55 starters 25 finished the Cat ¾ race.

Shad Smith (Trek/VW) and Brian Jensen (Successful Living) put on a crit riding clinic extraordinaire that left other racers wondering what happen. Calling all Elite Riders to come out and give it a go!

For the past decade the Spring Fling Criterium series has been donating one dollar from every race entry fee to the Clinton Lake Handicap Access Fund. With the continued support of Spring Fling Sponsors and supporting racers we have donated a significant amount. Recently Jerry Schecher, the Clinton Lake State Park director, shared some positive news.  One of Jerry’s goals is to increase accessibility for all individuals.  With matching funds from the Kansas’s Wild Trust fund, Clinton Lake will be building a Handicap accessible restroom for their Handicap Access Trail area.  Revolution racing proudly supports this goal.

Clinton Lake has built a short run of trails that are handicap accessible at boatramp #3 on the north end of the state park.  The addition of a restroom is needed. Clinton lake manger Jerry Schechter will be holding a dedication ceromoney this summer to acknowledge the support of Revolution Racing and its partners.

More funds are needed to build a handicap accessible fishing dock. Revolution Racing looks forward to a continued partnership with Clinton Lake State Park and Wild Trust to further enhance Clinton Lake’s accessibility. Revolution Racing extends sincere thanks to Spring Fling Race Sponsors, race participants, and all community partners.
